![]() ![]() TOP TIP: use slightly coarse sea salt like Maldon to frost your glass, not fine table salt. The salt works wonders to amplify the flavour of the tequila while balancing the sourness of the lime. Should you rim the glass with salt when serving Margaritas? This comes down, yet again, to personal preference! A good compromise is to only frost HALF the glass giving you the best of both worlds. As a rule of thumb always taste your drink before serving and make last minute adjustments to suit your personal preferences. You might need to play around with the ratios until you are happy with your Margarita. ![]() It’s also lighter in calories – glass is under 200! My version is stripped down to just the essentials and all the better for it. Some recipes call for both Cointreau and Grand Marnier, others add agave syrup. Grand Marnier: a cognac-based orange liqueur.Tequila: as discussed, either Silver or Reposado.Margaritas generally work on a 2:1:1 ratio: two measures of tequila, one measure orange liqueur, one measure lime juice. You only need three premium ingredients plus ice and (maybe) salt. Choose between a good- quality Silver and a Reposado, whatever you prefer and can afford. This recipe is ready in 5 minutes or less and is perfect for Cinco de Mayo, National Margarita Day (February 22nd), or just a day when you need a classic yet high-end drink, but dont want to go out. Others prefer Reposado tequila which generally tends to be a little pricier. In my opinion, Silver tequila is a great option for Margaritas. Añejo: aged for over 12 months, amber coloured and more complex in flavour.Reposado: (rested) aged between 2 months and 11 months, light golden in colour.Silver (Blanco | Plata | White | Platinum): Clear, un-aged tequila.Simply put, you will want to stick with 100% agave Tequila and avoid the other kind, certainly where a Cadillac Margarita is concerned. There’s two main types of tequilas: 100% Blue Agave, and Mixto (Mixed). Now we are absolutely spoiled for choice when it comes to decent tequila options. Good quality 100% agave tequila used to be hard to find up until the 1970s. If you are used to being served watered down Margaritas made with cheap tequila and sweet & sour mix, this homemade version is sure to knock your socks off! Rim the glass with salt then decorate the glass with both an orange wheel and a lime wheel. When it comes to the garnish, don’t hold back. While this certainly looks pretty, it tastes much better when shaken in with the other ingredients, fully incorporating its bright orange flavors into the cocktail. Speaking of Grand Marnier, some recipes call for the liqueur to be floated atop the cocktail. This style of tequila works particularly well with the orange flavors in the Grand Marnier, a Cognac-based orange liqueur. Reposado tequilas, unlike blanco tequilas, are briefly aged in oak barrels, resulting in a light golden spirit that is round and mellow with some vanilla twinges. While a standard Cadillac Margarita is often made with any old premium tequila, the best one to choose is a reposado. The cocktail caught on and can now be found on the menu at pretty much any chain restaurant with south-of-the-border leanings. To highlight those brands (and charge a premium on a simple cocktail), an unnamed bartender created the Cadillac Margarita, made with quality tequila and Grand Marnier in place of the usual brandless triple sec. It began in the late ‘80s, when Margaritas were all the rage but quality tequila was only just starting to creep onto shelves with brands like Patrón. The ultimate, luxury Margarita, the Cadillac Margarita is more than just a marketing ploy. ![]()
